What it means
تمدن (tamaddon) means “civilization.” It is borrowed from Arabic and is a Form V verbal noun from the root م-د-ن, the same root that gives us مدینه (madine, “city”). The word entered Persian through the Islamic intellectual tradition and is used to describe organized, complex societies with law, art, and learning. A useful contrast: فرهنگ (farhang) refers to culture, particularly shared values, arts, and language, while تمدن describes the broader structural achievement of an organized society.
How to use it
- ایران یکی از قدیمیترین تمدنهای دنیاست. (Irân yeki az qadimi-tarin tamaddon-hâ-ye donyâst.) “Iran is one of the oldest civilizations in the world.”
- تمدن بدون صلح پیشرفت نمیکنه. (Tamaddon bedun-e solh pishraft nemi-kone.) “Civilization does not advance without peace.”
- این موزه تاریخ تمدن بشر رو نشون میده. (In muze târikh-e tamaddon-e bashar ro neshun mide.) “This museum shows the history of human civilization.”
- تمدن ایران تأثیر زیادی رو جهان گذاشته. (Tamaddon-e Irân ta’sir-e ziâdi ro jahân gozâshte.) “Iranian civilization has had a great influence on the world.”
Cultural note
Iranians often invoke تمدن when discussing the antiquity and global reach of Persian culture, particularly the Achaemenid and Sassanid empires. The phrase تمدن ایران (tamaddon-e Irân) carries pride about contributions to science, art, governance, and philosophy long before the modern era. In academic and journalistic writing, تمدن is the standard term for civilization in world history discussions, and it appears in school textbooks from early grades onward.
