What it means
تخصص (takhassos) means specialization, expertise, or a professional field of mastery. Persian borrowed this word from Arabic, where it is built on the root خ-ص-ص (kh-s-s), meaning to be specific or to distinguish oneself in a particular area. In everyday use, تخصص can refer to a person’s professional specialty (for example, a doctor’s medical field), their depth of skill in a subject, or the act of specializing in something. A close companion word is تخصصی (takhassosi), the adjective meaning specialized or expert-level, as in دورهی تخصصی, a specialized course or training program.
How to use it
- تخصصم طراحی گرافیکه. (takhassosam tarrâhi-ye gerâfike.) “My specialty is graphic design.”
- این کار نیاز به تخصص داره. (in kâr niyâz be takhassos dâre.) “This job requires expertise.”
- تو حوزهی تخصصیت چیه؟ (tu howze-ye takhassosit chiye?) “What is your field of specialization?”
- اون تخصص لازم رو نداره. (oon takhassos-e lâzem ro nadâre.) “He does not have the required expertise.”
Cultural note
In Iranian professional culture, declaring your تخصص early in a conversation is common and carries social weight. University degrees are closely tied to this concept: a کارشناسی (bachelor’s) is seen as a foundation, while a کارشناسی ارشد (master’s) or دکترا is expected before someone is taken seriously as a true specialist. In government and state institutions, written تخصص credentials and official certifications often matter more than practical experience alone.
