What it means
کارشناسی (kârshenâsi) is a native Persian compound formed from کار (kâr, work) and شناسی (shenâsi, knowing or recognition, from the verb شناختن). The word carries two distinct but connected meanings. In professional and legal contexts, it means expert assessment or technical evaluation, the kind a court-appointed engineer or forensic specialist provides. In the educational system, کارشناسی is the official name for a bachelor’s degree program, typically four years long. A related form, کارشناسی ارشد (kârshenâsi-ye arshad), means master’s degree. There is no Arabic or Turkic influence in this word; it is built entirely from Persian roots.
How to use it
- مدرک کارشناسیم رو گرفتم. (madrak-e kârshenâsim ro gereftam.) “I received my bachelor’s degree.”
- گزارش کارشناسی ارائه شد. (gozâresh-e kârshenâsi erâe shod.) “The expert assessment report was submitted.”
- دانشجوی کارشناسیم. (dâneshjuye kârshenâsim.) “I am a bachelor’s student.”
- کارشناسان بررسی کردن. (kârshenâsân barresi kardan.) “The experts reviewed it.”
Cultural note
The کارشناسی degree is the baseline credential for most white-collar employment in Iran. Government hiring, bank jobs, and even many private-sector positions list مدرک کارشناسی as the minimum requirement. As a result, university enrollment in Iran has grown enormously since the 1990s, and the gap between having a کارشناسی degree and finding work that matches it has become a recurring social and economic concern discussed openly in Iranian media.
