What it means
تهیهکننده (tahyye-konande) is the producer of a film, television series, or stage production, the person who finds the money, hires the crew, manages the schedule, and carries the project from script to screen. The compound is transparent: تهیه (tahyye, preparation, provisioning, an Arabic-origin noun) plus کننده (konande, doer, the present-participle of کردن, to do). Literally, “the one who provides.”
The producer is the role that does not appear on camera but without whom no Iranian film exists. The opening credits of every Iranian feature read کارگردان (director), then فیلمنامه (screenplay), then تهیهکننده. The producer’s name on the credits is what tells you which production company actually made the film happen.

The role in Iranian cinema
The Iranian producer works in a market shaped by state involvement. The Farabi Cinema Foundation, set up in 1983, was for decades the central producer of art-house Iranian cinema and the gateway to international festival submission. Private producers (Boshra Film, Filmiran, the Karnameh group) operate alongside it, and television series mostly come through IRIB-owned production. A tahyye-konande in Iran negotiates not only budgets and crew but also the script approval process at Ershad (the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance), the festival circuit politics, and the censorship rules.
Internationally, a few Iranian producers have made names of their own. Alexandre Mallet-Guy, Farhadi’s French co-producer through Memento Films, helped move Iranian cinema into European art-house distribution; Iranian-born producers in the diaspora have moved into Hollywood and European systems.
Where it comes from
The Arabic root h-y-‘ gives تهیه (tahyye, preparation), one of many Arabic abstract nouns absorbed into Persian. Combined with the Persian کننده (doer, agent), the compound is half-Arabic, half-Persian, which is typical of modern Iranian professional vocabulary. The construction dates to the establishment of organized Iranian film and theater in the early twentieth century, when Persian needed a word for the new role.
The institutions
Khaneh-ye Cinema (Iran Cinema House) is the producers’ guild and professional body. The Fajr Film Festival every February is the central marketplace where producers premiere their year’s work. The Farabi Cinema Foundation handles international festival submissions for Iranian films, including Academy Award submissions for Best International Feature.
In our voice
The director gets the interview; the producer gets the credit and the headaches. In Iran the producer’s job is also the political shield, because a producer who can navigate Ershad approval is the difference between a film that exists and one that does not.
