تفکر pronounced by Elyar

What it means

تفکر (tafakkor) is the Persian word for contemplation, deep thinking, the act of reflective thought. It names the activity itself, not the result. تفکر is what happens when you sit with a problem; فکر (fekr) is the everyday word for a thought or a quick consideration. The pair is similar to the English pair “thinking” versus “contemplation.”

You use تفکر when the thinking is serious, sustained, philosophical, or spiritual. It is the word religious texts use, the word philosophy books use, the word teachers reach for when they want students to slow down. It is not a casual word.

How to use it

تفکر often appears as the object of verbs like کردن (kardan, to do), داشتن (dāshtan, to have), or واداشتن (vādāshtan, to compel), as well as in fixed combinations like قدرت تفکر (qodrat-e tafakkor, the power of thought) and عمیق فکر کردن (amigh fekr kardan, to think deeply).

Deep contemplation is necessary to solve this problem.

Where it comes from

Tafakkor is Arabic, the verbal noun (masdar) of the form V verb تفكّر (tafakkara, to contemplate, reflect on), built from the root f-k-r (فکر, to think). The form V pattern (taC1aC2C2uC) marks reflexive intensive action: literally, “engaging oneself in extended thinking.” The same root gives Persian فکر (fekr), افکار (afkār, thoughts), متفکر (motafakker, thinker), and فکری (fekri, intellectual, adjectival). تفکر entered Persian through medieval Islamic philosophy and theology, where it named a specific spiritual discipline of contemplation on God’s signs in creation, and it never lost that elevated register.

In our voice

If you are reaching for a B1 alternative, فکر کردن (fekr kardan) handles most situations. Save تفکر for sentences where you genuinely mean sustained deep thought, not a passing consideration. Mismatched register sounds pretentious in Persian fast.
