What it means
تبلت (teblet) is a direct loanword from English, referring to a tablet computer: a flat, touchscreen portable device larger than a phone but smaller than a laptop. The word entered Persian when tablet devices became commercially available in the early 2010s. No native Persian word exists for this device, so تبلت is used universally in both formal and informal contexts. A related term is لپتاپ (lâptâp) for a laptop, and گوشی (gushi) for a smartphone, placing تبلت between the two in size.
How to use it
- تبلتم رو برای مسافرت برداشتم. (tebletam ro barâye mosâferat bardâshtam.) “I took my tablet for the trip.”
- بچهام تبلت میخواد. (bacheh-am teblet mikhâd.) “My kid wants a tablet.”
- میتونم باهاش فیلم ببینم؟ (mitoonam bâhâsh film bebinam?) “Can I watch films on it?”
- تبلت برای نقاشی خوبه. (teblet barâye naqqâshi khoobeh.) “A tablet is good for drawing.”
Cultural note
In Iran, تبلت became popular among schoolchildren and university students as an affordable alternative to a laptop. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many Iranian schools shifted to online classes, and the demand for tablets rose sharply as families sought affordable devices for remote learning. The word is also used in Persian-language advertising and tech journalism without modification.
