What it means
بلیط (belit) means ticket. The word is borrowed from French “billet,” which historically referred to a written note or document and later came to mean a travel or entry ticket. Persian adopted it during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when France was the main European cultural reference point for Iran. It covers all ticket types: plane, train, bus, cinema, museum, or concert. The near-synonym کارت (kârt) exists but usually refers to cards rather than printed tickets.
How to use it
- بلیط قطار رو خریدی؟ (belit-e qatâr ro kharidi?) “Did you buy the train ticket?”
- دوتا بلیط برام بگیر. (do tâ belit baram begir.) “Get me two tickets.”
- بلیطم گم شد. (belitam gom shod.) “I lost my ticket.”
- بلیط هواپیما گرون شده. (belit-e havâpeymâ gerun shode.) “Plane tickets have gotten expensive.”
Cultural note
Before online booking became common in Iran, buying a بلیط often meant queuing at a terminal counter or using an agent called a بلیطفروش (belit-forush). Train travel between cities like Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz remains popular, and inter-city بلیط sales through the Raja Rail system are among the most searched travel queries for domestic tourism.
