آبان (âbân) is mid-Persian-autumn, October 23 to November 21, named for the Yazata of waters, and now permanently linked to the November 2019 fuel protests.
What it actually means
آبان is the eighth month of the Iranian solar calendar, running October 23 to November 21. The weather cools sharply, the trees in northern Iran turn yellow and red, and the first proper rains arrive after the dry summer. The word is built on آب (âb), “water”, and originally meant the sacred waters in Zoroastrian liturgy. For most of Iranian history آبان was a quiet, neutral month name. Since 2019 it has acquired a second meaning that no Iranian can avoid.

Where it comes from
آبان comes from Avestan Apam Napat or the broader Aban Yashts, hymns to the divine waters. The Yazata associated with the month is Anahita, the female divinity of waters, fertility, and wisdom, one of the most-revered figures in pre-Islamic Iranian religion. The month name is the plural of آب (âb, “water”), so آبان literally means “the waters”. The Sasanian calendar tied the month to Anahita and to the autumn rains, and the name carried forward unchanged into modern Persian.
Cultural note: Aban ’98
In آبان 1398 (November 2019), the Iranian government announced an overnight tripling of fuel prices. Protests broke out across the country and the state response was severe. Reuters reported in late 2019 that around 1,500 people were killed in the suppression, a figure widely cited though contested by official sources. The November 2019 events are referred to in Iranian political memory as آبان ۹۸ (âbân-e navad-o-hasht), and the phrase has acquired a weight similar to other date-as-shorthand events in modern Iranian history.
