What it means

صوفی (sufi) is a practitioner of تصوف (tasavvof), Sufism. The word is Arabic in origin, traditionally linked to صوف (suf, “wool”) for the rough wool cloaks early ascetics wore. A Sufi follows a path (طریقت, tariqat) under a master, aiming for direct experience of the divine rather than rule-based piety alone.

The Persian-language canon

The literary giants of the tradition all lived inside Persian-language Sufism: Rumi (whose Mevlevi order settled in Konya after his family fled the Mongol invasions), Saadi, Hafez, Attar, Sanai, and the proto-Sufis Bayazid Bastami and Mansur al-Hallaj all show up in any anthology. Attar’s Conference of the Birds (منطق‌الطیر), Rumi’s Masnavi, and Hafez’s Divan form the canon read in every Iranian home that still has a poetry shelf.

Living orders today

The two largest active Iranian Sufi orders are the Nimatullahi (نعمت‌اللهی) and the Gonabadi (گنابادی), with smaller Khaksar and Zahabi orders also present. The Gonabadis maintain houses (خانقاه) across Iran; the Nimatullahis have a strong diaspora presence in California, London, and Paris under the late Javad Nurbakhsh’s lineage. The 2018 Tehran clashes between Gonabadi dervishes and security forces left several dead and many imprisoned, the most public state-Sufi confrontation of recent decades.

Cultural and political note

Iranian Sufism is older than the Islamic Republic and runs alongside it, sometimes uneasily. The state’s relationship with Sufi orders has historically swung between suspicious tolerance and active suppression. In casual speech, calling someone صوفی can mean “deeply spiritual” or, depending on tone, “too detached from the real world to pay rent.” Avoid using the word loosely about anyone vaguely spiritual; Sufism is a specific path with masters, lineages, and practices, and Iranians who belong to orders take the label seriously. There is also a separate folk usage: in some rural and small-town speech, صوفی marks anyone who keeps long hair, fasts often, or refuses meat, regardless of actual order membership. The word stretches between strict initiation and loose social marker.
