What it means

شمال غرب (shomâl-e gharb) is the standard Persian term for northwest, the compass direction between north and west. شمال (shomâl) comes from the Arabic shamal meaning north, and غرب (gharb) from the Arabic gharb meaning west. Both are Arabic loanwords that entered Persian centuries ago and are now completely naturalized, treated by speakers as ordinary Persian words. The ezafe connector ـِ (e) joins them in standard use. The opposite direction is جنوب شرق (jonub-e shargh), southeast. In weather reports and geography lessons شمال غربی (shomâl-gharbi) serves as the adjectival form, meaning northwestern.

How to use it

  • آذربایجان در شمال غرب ایرانه. (âzarbâyjân dar shomâl-e gharb-e irâne.) “Azerbaijan is in the northwest of Iran.”
  • طوفان از شمال غرب میاد. (tufân az shomâl-e gharb miyâd.) “The storm is coming from the northwest.”
  • ما به سمت شمال غرب رفتیم. (mâ be samt-e shomâl-e gharb raftim.) “We headed toward the northwest.”
  • مناطق شمال غربی کشور سرده. (manâtegh-e shomâl-gharbi-ye keshvar sarde.) “The northwestern regions of the country are cold.”

Cultural note

The northwest of Iran, covering the provinces of West Azerbaijan, East Azerbaijan, and Ardabil, is a region of great historical and ethnic diversity, home to large Azerbaijani-speaking populations and sharing borders with Turkey, Armenia, and the Republic of Azerbaijan. The city of Tabriz in East Azerbaijan has historically been one of Iran’s most important commercial and cultural centers, serving as a capital under several dynasties. In Persian geographic writing and broadcast media, شمال غرب appears constantly when discussing this strategically significant corner of the country.
