What it means

شجاع (shojâ) is the standard Persian word for brave or courageous. It is a direct borrowing from Arabic, from the triliteral root ش-ج-ع (sh-j-ع), which produces words for bravery across the Arabic-speaking world. In Persian it is used freely in both spoken and written language, making it genuinely neutral in register. A related noun from the same root, شجاعت (shojâ’at, courage), is equally common. A near-synonym is دلیر (dalir), which is of Persian origin and slightly more poetic in feel.

How to use it

  • اون خیلی شجاعه، از هیچ‌چیزی نمی‌ترسه. (Oon kheyli shojâe, az hichizi nemitarse.) “He is very brave, he is not afraid of anything.”
  • برای دفاع از دوستش شجاعانه وایساد. (Barâye dafâ az dostash shojâ’âne vâysâd.) “He bravely stood up to defend his friend.”
  • یه تصمیم شجاعانه گرفت و استعفا داد. (Ye tasmim shojâ’âne gereft o este’fâ dâd.) “He made a courageous decision and resigned.”
  • دخترم خیلی شجاعه، از تاریکی نمی‌ترسه. (Dokhtaram kheyli shojâe, az târiki nemitarse.) “My daughter is very brave, she is not afraid of the dark.”

Cultural note

شجاع and شجاعت appear throughout classical Persian poetry, particularly in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, where heroic warriors are celebrated with this exact root. Because of that literary history, the word carries a slight epic weight even in modern everyday speech. In contrast, the more colloquial باحال (bâhâl) or جیگر (jigar) might be used by young speakers to express admiration for someone gutsy, but شجاع remains the unmarked, respectable choice at any age.
