In Shia Islam, descent from the Prophet through Fatima and Ali is the foundation of the entire Imamate doctrine; the twelve Imams are all descendants of this couple. By extension, every seyyed is part of the broader آل بیت (âl-e bayt, "the household of the Prophet") and entitled to certain religious respect.
