What it means
ردیف (radif) literally means “row” or “sequence” in Persian. In classical music it has become the proper name for the entire codified repertoire of Persian art music: every dastgah, every avaz, every gushe, in the order in which they are taught and performed. The radif is the canon. It is the closest Iranian equivalent to what the maqam system is in Arab and Turkish music, but the radif is more strictly fixed, with a written and orally transmitted curriculum.
When an Iranian musician says من ردیف یاد گرفتم (man radif yad gereftam, I learned the radif), they mean they have memorized the full sequence and can perform from it on demand.
UNESCO designation
In 2009 UNESCO inscribed the Persian classical radif on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a designation that recognized the radif as a living, transmitted oral and notated tradition rather than a museum artifact. The submission was prepared jointly by the Iranian Ministry of Culture and the Tehran Conservatory, and it cemented international recognition that Iranian classical music is a distinct, technically developed tradition rather than a regional variant of a broader Middle Eastern style.
The 2009 listing helped Tehran music schools secure stable government funding for radif instruction and gave senior teachers, especially the keepers of the Saba, Borumand, and Karimi lineages, a formal mandate to preserve their versions.
The transmission lines
The two most widely taught radif transmissions are the radif-e Mirza Abdollah (instrumental, from the late nineteenth century) and the radif-e Abdollah Davami (vocal, transcribed by Mahmud Karimi in the mid-twentieth century). Most professional Iranian musicians know one of these by heart. Several others, including the Saba radif and the Borumand radif, are taught in their own lineages and produce slightly different orderings and melodic ornaments.
To “know the radif” is the basic admission ticket to professional Persian classical work. Without it, a player is an enthusiast, not a serious musician.
