قاطی

What it means

قاطی (qati) is a colloquial Persian word with two close uses. The base sense is mixed in, blended together, stirred into something else. قاطی شد (qati shod) means it got mixed in, became part of the same batch. Stir sugar into tea and the sugar قاطی می‌شود (qati misheh) with the tea. Add a new student into an existing class and they قاطی می‌شوند (qati mishan) with the group. It is the everyday word for the moment two things stop being separate and become one.

The mental sense

The more alive use, the one you will hear constantly in Tehran, is the mental one. قاطی کردم (qati kardam) means I got confused, my thinking got scrambled, the wires crossed. A student trying to remember which verb conjugation is which says قاطی کردم. A friend trying to keep three appointments straight says قاطی کردم. The image is the same as the literal use, things that should be separate got mixed together in your head and now you cannot tell them apart.

There is a stronger version, قاطی پاتی (qati-pati), reduplicated, which means a complete jumble, total disorder, everything thrown together. اتاقش قاطی پاتیه (otaqesh qati-pati-e) is his room is a total mess. The reduplication amplifies the chaos.

Register note: qati is everyday colloquial speech. It is fine in messages, conversation, casual writing. In formal writing you reach for مخلوط (makhlut, mixed) or گیج (gij, confused) instead.

How to use it

shekar ro qati-ye chai kon.

Mix the sugar into the tea.

شکر رو قاطی چای کن.

esm-eshon hame qati shod, yadam nemiyad.

Their names all got mixed up, I don’t remember.

اسم‌شون همه قاطی شد، یادم نمیاد.

be khoda qati kardam, nemidoonam kodum-esh dorost-e.

I swear I got confused, I don’t know which one is right.

به خدا قاطی کردم، نمی‌دونم کدومش درسته.

Where it comes from

qati is a native Persian colloquial form, related to the older word آغاتی (aghati) and to the root sense of mixing and joining. The pronunciation with the qaf and the everyday register place it firmly in spoken Persian. The mental sense (qati kardam) is a metaphorical extension of the mixing sense, the same metaphor English uses when someone says they got their wires crossed or their thoughts got tangled.

qati is one of the most useful colloquial words you can learn early. You will use the mental sense whenever your Persian fails you, which at the beginning is often, and Iranians will smile because saying قاطی کردم about your own Persian is the most Persian thing a learner can do.
