پیشه ور

What it means

پیشه ور (pisheh-var) is the Persian word for a tradesperson, an artisan, anyone whose work is a پیشه (pisheh, craft, profession). The word covers the carpenter, the coppersmith, the shoemaker, the tinsmith, the rope-maker, the tailor, the baker. Historically the pisheh-vari was a social class: the urban middle layer between merchants above and laborers below, the people who actually made the things Iran’s cities ran on.

Before industrialization, the pisheh-vari class was the urban backbone. They organized into guilds (اصناف, asnaf), trained apprentices, defended their trade, held political weight inside the bazaar. In Qajar Tehran and Safavid Isfahan, the asnaf could shut down whole bazaars when they were angry, and they sometimes did.

How to use it

Use pisheh-var for traditional artisan trades. In modern usage the word is half-historical, half-still-current. People still call a working carpenter a pisheh-var, but they no longer call a software engineer one.

The asnaf system

Each trade had its guild, its master (استاد, ostad), its apprentices (شاگرد, shagerd), and its patron saint. The carpenters honored Noah, the bakers honored Abraham, the metalworkers honored David. Initiation rituals, fixed prices, codes of behavior between competitors: all of it was guild business. The Pahlavi modernization weakened the asnaf, the Islamic Republic restructured what was left, and globalized supply chains have done the rest. But walk the Tabriz bazaar today and you can still see the old shape of a pisheh-vari city.

Where it comes from

Pisheh-var is a Pure Persian compound. پیشه (pisheh) is profession, craft, occupation, a Middle Persian word that survived intact. ور (var) is the Persian agent suffix for bearer, the same one in پیله ور (pilevar) and شناور (shenavar). Pisheh-var literally is the profession-bearer, the one who carries a craft. The whole word is native and predates Arabic vocabulary influence.

The pisheh-var is a thinning class. Cheap imports and factory production have eaten most of the trades they used to hold. What remains is precious: the last working coppersmiths in Esfahan’s Naqsh-e Jahan square, the last hand-block-printing fabric makers in Isfahan, the master rug-restorers of Tabriz. If you can buy from one of them, do it.
