What it means
زرگر (zargar) is the Persian word for a goldsmith, a jeweler, anyone who works in زر (zar, gold). The trade has its own lane in Tehran’s Bazaar-e Bozorg, an entire branching corridor called Bazaar-e Zargarha, where hundreds of small shops sit side by side, each window stacked with rings, bangles, necklaces, earrings, all weighed in grams and priced against the daily gold rate. Walk through on a Thursday afternoon before a wedding and you cannot move.
Iranian gold is high karat by default: 18-karat is the floor, 22-karat is common, 24-karat coins (سکه, sekkeh) are a savings instrument as much as jewelry. The zargar designs, sometimes makes the piece himself, sometimes commissions a workshop, weighs it on a precise scale in front of you, and prices it by gram plus a wage (اجرت, ojrat) for the craftsmanship.
How to use it
Use zargar for the goldsmith or jeweler. The shop is called مغازه زرگری (maghazeh-ye zargari) or just زرگری (zargari).
rafrim pish-e zargar baraye haleqe-ye arusi.
We went to the goldsmith for the wedding ring.
رفتیم پیش زرگر برای حلقه عروسی.
zargar goft emruz nerkh-e tala bala rafte, farda biaid.
The jeweler said the gold rate has gone up today, come back tomorrow.

The wedding economy
Iranian weddings run on gold. The mehrieh (دفعه, marriage portion contractually promised by the groom) is denominated in gold coins. The bride’s jewelry set (سرویس, servis) is a serious purchase, often passed down. The groom’s family buys the engagement ring at a zargar, the bride’s family negotiates the servis, and both sides know the day’s gold rate before they walk in. The zargar is part jeweler, part informal banker, part wedding consultant.
Where it comes from
Zargar is a Pure Persian compound and one of the oldest. زر (zar) is gold, a word that goes straight back to Old Persian zarniya and reconstructs to Proto-Indo-Iranian for yellow, golden, the same root that gives Avestan zaranya, Sanskrit hiranya, and ultimately the English yellow through deeper Indo-European cognates. گر (-gar) is the Persian agent suffix from a verb root meaning to do, to make. Zargar literally is the gold-maker, the one who works gold. The word predates Islamic Iran by a thousand years.

The zargar is the steadiest trade in the bazaar.
