پیاده

What it means

پیاده (piâde) is a pure Persian adjective and adverb meaning on foot, dismounted, or not riding. By itself it describes a person who is walking rather than using any vehicle. It combines productively with شدن (shodan, to become) and رفتن (raftan, to go) to form phrases every Persian speaker uses daily. پیاده شدن means to get off or to dismount, whether from a bus, a car, a taxi, or a horse. پیاده رفتن means to go somewhere on foot, often implying the choice or necessity of walking instead of riding. The word also appears in chess, where پیاده (piâde) is the pawn, the piece that moves on foot without a mount.

• اینجا پیاده میشم (injâ piâde misham) “I’m getting off here.”
• پیاده رفتیم تا میدون (piâde raftim tâ meydun) “We walked all the way to the square.”
• کجا پیاده میشی؟ (kojâ piâde mishi?) “Where are you getting off?”

Tehran’s traffic is legendary, and the question کجا پیاده میشی is a reflex in every shared taxi (savâri) ride. Drivers and passengers negotiate stops constantly, and knowing پیاده شدن is essential for navigating the city. In a broader sense, پیاده رفتن has a nostalgic quality for many Iranians who grew up in smaller cities or villages where walking was the default, not the exception.
