What it means
پیاده شدن (piyâdeh shodan) means to get off or to disembark from a vehicle. It is a compound verb formed from پیاده (piyâde), a pure Persian adjective and noun meaning «on foot» or «pedestrian,» and the light verb شدن (shodan), «to become.» Together the literal sense is «to become on foot,» which captures the moment of stepping off a bus, train, taxi, or any other vehicle. It is the direct antonym of سوار شدن (savâr shodan, to get on). In formal or written Persian you might also see پیاده کردن (piyâde kardan) in the transitive sense, meaning «to drop someone off,» but for the act of getting off yourself, پیاده شدن is the standard form.

- کجا پیاده میشی؟ (Kojâ piyâde mishi?) “Where are you getting off?”
- همینجا پیاده بشید لطفاً. (Haminjâ piyâde beshid lotfan.) “Please get off here.”
- از اتوبوس پیاده شدم. (Az otobus piyâde shodam.) “I got off the bus.”
- راننده گفت اینجا باید پیاده بشیم. (Rânnande goft injâ bâyad piyâde beshim.) “The driver said we have to get off here.”
Cultural note
In Tehran’s shared taxi system (known as تاکسی مسیری, line taxis), passengers shout پیاده دارم! (piyâde dâram!), meaning «someone’s getting off!», to signal the driver to stop. This informal shorthand is instantly understood by every driver and passenger. On intercity buses and trains, the equivalent announcement is آماده پیاده شدن بشید (âmâde-ye piyâde shodan beshid), «prepare to disembark,» in a more formal register. The root پیاده also appears in پیادهرو (piyâde-ro), the sidewalk, reinforcing its core meaning of being on foot.
