پنجاه
Meaning
معنیThe number fifty marks a turning point in Iranian life narratives. The پنجاهسالگی (panjâh-sâlegi), "fiftieth year," is treated as the moment a person fully enters middle age, a milestone celebrated with family gatherings and often photographed for the family album. In Iranian poetry and song, fifty also marks the age at which a person is expected to have wisdom worth sharing, with the proverb پنجاه که شد، عقل به سر میآید (panjâh ke shod, aql be sar miyâyad), "when you hit fifty, sense arrives." The decade of the 1350s in the Iranian calendar (روزگار پنجاه, ruzgâr-e panjâh, the 1970s in the Gregorian calendar) is remembered nostalgically by older Iranians as the years before the revolution: a specific cultural shorthand. In modern slang, پنجاه پنجاه (panjâh panjâh), "fifty-fifty," entered Persian directly from English and now means an even split or a coin-flip outcome, used everywhere from sports betting to predicting whether the rice will turn out crispy. The number also appears in Iranian sports commentary as the standard unit for stadium attendance estimates, and in commerce, پنجاه درصد تخفیف (panjâh darsad takhfif), "fifty percent off," is the magic phrase that brings shoppers into Tehran's bazaars during sale seasons.
