What it means
اروپا (Orupâ) is the Persian name for the continent of Europe. The word traces back to the ancient Greek “Eurōpē,” whose exact etymology is debated but is often linked to Greek roots suggesting breadth or the setting sun, referring to the lands west of Greece. Persian borrowed the name through centuries of geographic and scholarly contact, and it appears in both classical texts and modern speech. The adjective form is اروپایی (Orupâyi), meaning European.
How to use it
- اروپا خونه کشورهای زیادیه. (Orupâ khune-ye keshvarhâ-ye ziâdiye.) “Europe is home to many countries.”
- تابستون گذشته رفتیم اروپا گشتیم. (Tâbestun-e gozashte raftim Orupâ gashtim.) “Last summer we traveled around Europe.”
- خیلی از ایرانیها دنبال ویزای اروپان. (Kheyli az Irânihâ donbâl-e vizâ-ye Orupân.) “Many Iranians are looking for a European visa.”
- اروپا از نظر تاریخی خیلی غنیه. (Orupâ az nazar-e târikhi kheyli ghaniye.) “Europe is very rich historically.”
Cultural note
For many Iranians, اروپا is both a geographic reality and a powerful cultural reference point. European countries are among the top destinations for Iranian students, professionals, and asylum seekers, and Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands in particular host large Iranian communities. Historically, Iran’s engagement with European thought, from the Constitutional Revolution of 1906 to literary modernism, shaped much of 20th-century Persian intellectual life.
