دندان پزشک

What it means

دندان‌پزشک (dandanpezeshk) is the Persian word for dentist. It is a transparent compound: دندان (dandan, tooth) plus پزشک (pezeshk, doctor). Literally, the tooth-doctor. The word is everyday, neutral, and used everywhere from clinic signs to children’s books.

The structure of the word also tells you how Persian builds medical specialties. The pattern is {body-part}-پزشک. You can multiply it across the body: چشم‌پزشک (cheshmpezeshk, eye-doctor, ophthalmologist), قلب‌پزشک (less common, the formal term is متخصص قلب), پوست‌پزشک (less common, formal is متخصص پوست). The dandan version is the most thoroughly established because dentistry is its own discipline with its own training track.

How it works in daily life

Iran has a strong private dental sector. A dandanpezeshk in Tehran runs a private مطب, often beautifully equipped, and prices are low by Western standards. Iran has become a dental tourism destination for people from the Gulf, Central Asia, and even Europe, who fly in for crowns and implants that would cost five times more in Berlin.

For Iranians, the dandanpezeshk is a regular but not loved part of life. Most adults have at least one bad memory of a childhood filling. The trade is respected, the bill is mostly cash, and good dandanpezeshks are recommended by word of mouth, not advertising.

The compound pattern

The {body-part}-پزشک pattern is one of the most productive medical compounding rules in modern Persian. It works because پزشک itself was revived as a pure Persian alternative to the Arabic طبیب, and the body-part nouns in Persian are short, native, and combine cleanly. دندان is pure Persian. چشم is pure Persian. روان (ravan, mind, psyche) is pure Persian. The whole vocabulary of named medical specialties is being slowly rebuilt in Persian roots, against the older habit of borrowing Greek-Latin terms through French.

Dandanpezeshk is a small word for a respected trade. If you live in Iran for a year and your teeth still hurt, find a good dandanpezeshk and let him fix you up. You will pay less than you ever paid abroad, and the work is often better.
