What it means
نوتیف (notif) is Gen Z Persian for an app notification: the Instagram push, the WhatsApp message preview, the Telegram badge, the Bazaar update alert. The word is a clipped borrowing from English notification, and it sits squarely in young, urban, online speech. Anyone under 30 in Tehran says نوتیف. Anyone over 50 says either pe پیام (payām, message) or, on state media, the full official calque اطلاع رسانی (etelā’-rasāni, information-conveying), a phrase no real person ever uses to describe a phone alert.
The Farhangestan adopted اطلاع رسانی for the institutional broadcasting sense (an official notice goes out, an organization announces something) but the word never crossed into describing the buzz from your phone. That slot belongs to نوتیف.

The generational split
Notif is a clean marker of internet-native speech. Using it correctly signals you grew up with a smartphone, you live in app interfaces, and you read internet writing in Persian. The full form notification also exists in Persian (نوتیفیکیشن, notification), but it sounds clunky, the way “messaging application” sounds in English compared to “the app.” Gen Z preferred a one-syllable trim. Older Iranians who do not use the word usually reach for پیام (payām, message) for any incoming app alert, which loses the technical specificity but works in context.
Where it comes from
Notification crossed into Persian through iOS and Android interface localizations, where the English term appeared in app settings, system menus, and software documentation. Persian users absorbed the long form and quickly chopped it. The clipping pattern follows the same shortening logic English itself applies to internet vocabulary (info, app, sub, pic), suggesting the borrowing carried the casual-clipped instinct along with the word.
In our voice
Use نوتیف freely in casual writing and speech with anyone under 40. In formal or institutional contexts use the full Persian پیام or, if you must, اطلاع. The official اطلاع رسانی is for broadcasts; do not use it for what your phone does at 11pm.
