نیت

In Shia jurisprudence, niyat is a precondition for almost every act of worship. The five daily prayers, the fast of Ramadan, the hajj pilgrimage, ritual ablution: each requires the worshipper to silently form the intention before starting. The classical formulation is something like "I intend to perform the noon prayer, four units, in obedience to God, drawing near to Him." The wording can stay in the heart; it does not have to be spoken aloud.
