What it means
نظریهپرداز (nazariye-pardaz) is the Persian word for a theorist, someone whose work is constructing theories. The word is built from نظریه (nazariyeh, theory) and the Persian agent suffix پرداز (pardaz, one who shapes, processes, elaborates). Literally: “theory-shaper.” In English it lands closest to “theorist” but the Persian word carries a faint flavor of “theory-builder,” emphasizing the productive labor of generating a framework rather than just holding one.
It sits one rung above متفکر (motafakker) in academic specificity. A motafakker can be anyone with serious ideas; a nazariye-pardaz has a named theory attached to their name. Antonio Gramsci is a nazariye-pardaz. Habermas is a nazariye-pardaz. The local newspaper columnist with strong opinions is not.
How to use it
Use nazariye-pardaz in academic, social-science, and serious-press contexts. It is at home in book reviews, university seminars, and policy writing. It would feel oddly heavy in casual conversation.

Where it comes from
The compound is mixed: نظریه (nazariyeh) is Arabic-origin, from the root n-z-r (نظر, to look, view, consider), so nazariyeh literally is “a way of looking, a viewpoint, a theory.” پرداز (pardaz) is pure Persian, the present stem of پرداختن (pardākhtan, to attend to, polish, elaborate, pay). Persian builds productive agent compounds with pardaz: سخنپرداز (sokhan-pardaz, eloquent speaker, wordsmith), خیالپرداز (khiāl-pardaz, fantasist), داستانپرداز (dāstān-pardaz, storyteller). Nazariye-pardaz is the modern academic addition to that family, calqued onto the European notion of “theorist” in the twentieth century as Iranian universities absorbed European social science.

Nazariye-pardaz is a word with weight. Iranians who use it are usually serious about ideas and serious about the person they are naming.
