What it means
موزیسین (muzisyen) refers to a musician, meaning any person who plays an instrument or works professionally in music. The word is borrowed directly from the French musicien, which explains the characteristic -syen ending rather than the English -shan one might expect. In everyday Persian you might also hear نوازنده (navâzande), which specifically means “instrumentalist” and makes a useful contrast: a navâzande plays; a muzisyen can perform, compose, or produce.
How to use it
- اون یه موزیسین حرفهایه. (on ye muzisyen herfeh-ie.) “He is a professional musician.”
- دوست دارم موزیسین بشم. (dust dâram muzisyen besham.) “I want to become a musician.”
- موزیسینهای ایرانی خیلی با استعدادن. (muzisyen-hâye irâni kheili bâ este’dâdan.) “Iranian musicians are very talented.”
- این موزیسین با سه ساز کار میکنه. (in muzisyen bâ se sâz kâr mikone.) “This musician works with three instruments.”
Cultural note
French was the dominant European prestige language among educated Iranians during the Qajar and early Pahlavi periods, and a large share of Persian technical vocabulary in music and the arts entered the language through French rather than English. Words like موزیسین, کنسرت (konsert), and پیانو (piâno) all follow this French channel. After the 1979 revolution, public performance faced heavy restrictions, but professional musicians continued to work in recording studios, film scores, and private settings, and the word موزیسین remained fully in use throughout.
