What it means
آهنگساز (âhangsâz) is a Persian compound noun meaning a composer or, in more modern usage, a music producer. It is built from two native Persian elements: آهنگ (âhang), meaning “melody” or “song,” and ساز (sâz), which derives from ساختن (sâkhtan), meaning “to make” or “to build.” Together they form a transparent compound: the one who makes melodies. In classical contexts the word refers to a composer who writes musical scores; in contemporary pop and film contexts it often covers the role of producer as well.
How to use it
- اون آهنگساز مشهوریه. (on âhangsâz-e mashhurie.) “He is a famous composer.”
- آهنگساز این فیلم کیه؟ (âhangsâz-e in film kie?) “Who is the composer of this film?”
- دارم با یه آهنگساز جوون کار میکنم. (dâram bâ ye âhangsâz-e javun kâr mikonam.) “I am working with a young composer.”
- آهنگساز آهنگ جدیدی ساخت. (âhangsâz âhang-e jadidi sâkht.) “The composer created a new song.”
Cultural note
Iran has a long tradition of instrumental composition tied to its classical modal system, and figures like Abolhasan Saba and Parviz Meshkatian helped define the role of the âhangsâz in the 20th century. In the contemporary industry, the line between composer and producer has blurred significantly, and the word âhangsâz now covers both the orchestral scorer and the studio beatmaker. Film scoring is a particularly active field: Iranian cinema regularly features original scores that blend Western instruments with the Persian tar, setar, and kamancheh.
