What it means
مورد (mowred) means case, instance, or subject under consideration. It is borrowed from Arabic mawrid, a noun of place from the root W-R-D meaning to arrive or to come to a source of water, giving the sense of a point of reference or a specific matter at hand. In Persian it is used in two main ways. On its own, مورد means a case or an instance: مورد خاص (mowred-e khâs) means a particular case. In the prepositional phrase در مورد (dar mowred), meaning about or regarding, it is one of the most frequent phrases in both spoken and written Persian. A second common construction is مورد + abstract noun + قرار گرفتن (qarâr gereftan), meaning to be subjected to something, for example مورد توجه قرار گرفت (mowred-e tavajjoh qarâr gereft) means it received attention or it was attended to.
How to use it
- در مورد این موضوع چیزی نمیدونم. (dar mowred-e in mozzu’ chizi nemidunam.) “I don’t know anything about this subject.”
- این یه مورد استثناییه. (in ye mowred-e estesnâ’i-ye.) “This is an exceptional case.”
- در مورد فردا حرف بزنیم. (dar mowred-e fardâ harf bezanim.) “Let’s talk about tomorrow.”
- چند مورد مشکل داشتیم. (chand mowred moshkel dâshtim.) “We had a few problem cases.”
Cultural note
The phrase در مورد is so embedded in Persian conversation that native speakers use it almost unconsciously as a topic-opener, the way English speakers say as for or when it comes to. In formal writing and bureaucratic Persian, the longer compound مورد + قرار گرفتن construction is extremely common: مورد بررسی قرار گرفت (it was examined), مورد تایید قرار گرفت (it was confirmed). Learning مورد unlocks dozens of such official-sounding phrases that appear constantly in news headlines, legal documents, and government announcements.
