What it means
لیموشیرین (limu-shirin) means “sweet lime” in Persian, referring to the mild, low-acid citrus fruit (Citrus limettioides or Citrus sinensis x Citrus aurantifolia hybrids) that is very popular in Iran. The compound combines لیمو (limu), which came into Persian from Arabic لیمون (laymun), itself from Persian or Sanskrit roots, and شیرین (shirin), the native Persian word meaning sweet. This pairing directly contrasts with لیموترش (limu-torsh), meaning sour lime or lemon. لیموشیرین is distinct from the tart lime most familiar in Western cooking.
How to use it
- یه آب لیموشیرین بده، لطفاً. (ye âb limu-shirin bede, lotfan.) “Give me a sweet lime juice, please.”
- لیموشیرین برای گلودرد خوبه. (limu-shirin barâye galodard khube.) “Sweet lime is good for a sore throat.”
- لیموشیرین رو نصف کن. (limu-shirin ro nesf kon.) “Cut the sweet lime in half.”
- از لیموشیرین آب بگیر. (az limu-shirin âb begir.) “Squeeze the juice from the sweet lime.”
Cultural note
لیموشیرین is one of the most widely consumed citrus fruits in Iran, particularly drunk fresh-squeezed at juice stands (آبمیوهفروشی) throughout the country. Unlike the sharp, acidic limes common in Western cooking, the sweet lime has a gentle, almost floral flavor that appeals to those who find tart citrus too strong. It is also commonly recommended in Iranian folk medicine as a remedy for colds, sore throats, and digestive complaints.
