What it is
لیگ برتر (lig-e bartar) is the Iranian top-flight football league, officially branded the Persian Gulf Pro League (لیگ برتر خلیج فارس). Sixteen clubs compete from late summer through May in a home-and-away format, thirty matches per club per season. The league was founded in 2001 in its current single-table form, replacing the older Âzâdegân League at the top of the pyramid. The bottom three clubs are relegated; the top three from the second division (now called Âzâdegân) go up.

The big clubs
Two Tehran clubs (Persepolis and Esteghlal) and one Isfahani club (Sepahan) have won the modern lig-e bartar more than anyone else combined. Tractor of Tabriz has won once. Foulâd of Khuzestan has won once. The league has had financial turbulence (delayed salaries, ownership disputes with state foundations) and political turbulence (sanctions cutting off broadcast rights), but it has never paused. The matches kept playing through the 2009 Green Movement, through the 2019 fuel protests, through the 2022 Mahsa uprising. People needed something to watch.
Standing in Asia
Three lig-e bartar clubs play in the AFC Champions League each season. Iranian clubs have reached the final in 2018 (Persepolis) and 2020 (Persepolis), and won the predecessor Asian Club Championship in 1970, 1971, and 1991 (all by Esteghlal-precursors). The league is rated by the AFC as one of the strongest in West Asia. Iranian players have been moving abroad in larger numbers since the 2018 World Cup: Mehdi Taremi at Porto, Sardar Azmoun at Zenit then Bayer Leverkusen, Alireza Jahanbakhsh at Brighton. Most of them started their senior careers in lig-e bartar.
The everyday meaning
For ordinary Iranian football fans, lig-e bartar is simply “the league.” The matches are televised on IRIB Channel 3 and on the private Antenna platform. Saturday and Sunday evenings during the season belong to live football. The result tables run on the front pages of newspapers like Khabar-e Varzeshi (خبر ورزشی, Sports News) and Iran-e Varzeshi.
