What it means

لامپ (lâmp) means “light bulb,” the glass bulb you screw into a socket to light a room. It is a loanword from French (lampe), and in everyday Persian it points specifically to the bulb itself, not the whole fixture. The lamp or fixture that holds it is usually called چراغ (cherâgh) or آباژور (âbâzhur) for a standing or table lamp, so when something stops working people first ask whether the لامپ has burned out before blaming the چراغ.

How to use it

  • لامپ سوخته (lâmp sukhte) “the bulb has burned out”
  • یه لامپ نو بخر (ye lâmp-e no bekhar) “buy a new bulb”
  • لامپ آشپزخونه رو عوض کن (lâmp-e âshpazkhune ro avaz kon) “change the kitchen bulb”
  • این لامپ کم مصرفه (in lâmp kam masrafe) “this is a low-energy bulb”

Cultural note

In most Iranian homes the old incandescent bulbs have largely given way to لامپ کم مصرف (low-energy bulbs) and LED ones, partly because of rising electricity costs and frequent talk of saving power. Hardware shops and even small corner stores keep a range of bulbs in different fittings, so replacing a لامپ is a quick errand. People often keep a spare bulb or two at home so a dark room never has to wait.
