B1 — Intermediate
What it means
آباژور (âbâžur) “shaded lamp, lampshade” is a lamp with a fabric or paper shade that diffuses the light softly downward, typically a table lamp (آباژور رومیزی, âbâžur-e rumizi) or a standing floor lamp (آباژور ایستاده, âbâžur-e istâde). It is a French loanword, from abat-jour (literally “that which deflects the daylight”). In Persian it names the whole lamp, not just the shade, and signals decorative, ambient lighting rather than a bare bulb or a ceiling chandelier.
How to use it
- آباژور رو روشن کن (âbâžur ro rowshan kon) “turn the lamp on”
- آباژور رو خاموش کن (âbâžur ro khâmush kon) “turn the lamp off”
- یه آباژور برای پذیرایی خریدیم (ye âbâžur barâye pazirâyi kharidim) “we bought a lamp for the living room”
- نور آباژور ملایمه (nur-e âbâžur molâyem-e) “the lamp’s light is soft”
Cultural note
An âbâžur is a decorating touch in Iranian homes, set in the corner of the pazirâyi (guest room) or beside the bed for reading at night, valued for the cozy, warm mood it creates rather than for bright task light.
