What it means
لوستر (luster) means “chandelier,” the decorative hanging light fixture you put in the ceiling of a living room or dining room, usually with several bulbs and often crystal or glass arms. It is a loanword from French (lustre) and is the normal, everyday word Iranians use, not a fancy one. For a plainer ceiling light or a wall lamp people often say چراغ (cherâgh) instead, so لوستر specifically signals the bigger, decorative kind.
How to use it
- لوستر رو روشن کن (luster ro rowshan kon) “turn on the chandelier”
- یه لوستر قشنگ برای پذیرایی خریدیم (ye luster-e ghashang barâye pazirâyi kharidim) “we bought a pretty chandelier for the living room”
- لوستر اتاق سوخته (luster-e otâgh sukhte) “the room’s chandelier has burned out”
- گردگیری لوستر خیلی سخته (gardgiri-ye luster kheyli sakhte) “dusting the chandelier is really hard”
Cultural note
A large لوستر in the main reception room (پذیرایی) is a point of pride in many Iranian homes, and crystal ones from brands associated with Bohemian or Italian glass are seen as a sign of a well-furnished house. Because guests are received in that room, families often invest in a showy chandelier there while keeping simpler lights elsewhere. Cleaning the crystal pieces before Nowruz is a common, dreaded part of spring cleaning.
