What it means
کوچولو (kuchulu) means “tiny,” “little one,” or “cutie.” It is the affectionate diminutive of کوچک (kuchak), “small.” The doubled vowel ending adds warmth and a sense of preciousness.
How to use it
- یه بچهی کوچولو (ye bachche-ye kuchulu) “a tiny little kid”
- کوچولوی من (kuchuluye man) “my little one”
- یه خونهی کوچولو (ye khune-ye kuchulu) “a tiny little house”
- چه کوچولویی! (che kuchuluyi) “what a cutie!”
Affection register
Kuchulu is family-and-friends warm. Parents call their toddlers کوچولو. Adults coo it at puppies, kittens, and tiny coffee cups. Said to another adult it lands as either flirty or condescending depending on tone, so be careful. Used at the wrong distance, it can sound patronizing rather than sweet.
Cultural note
Iranian families pile diminutives on small humans like sprinkles on cake. A single child might be called کوچولو، عزیز دلم، مامانی، فدات شم all in one breakfast. The kuchulu in particular sticks to nursery rhymes and Saturday morning cartoons. Older relatives keep using it long after the “tiny” person has grown taller than them, which everyone finds either embarrassing or endearing.
