خاک به سرم

/ khâk be saram /
interjection  ·  dirt on my head (oh no!)

Meaning

معنی
۱

The phrase belongs to a wider family of self-directed lament expressions Iranians toss out reflexively, including وای بر من and خدا مرگم بده (literally "may God give me death," used the same casual way). To outsiders this can sound alarming, especially the "give me death" version, which a confused houseguest might mistake for genuine despair. To Iranians it is verbal seasoning, a way to dramatize ordinary inconvenience and invite a bit of social warmth in response. The expected reply is rarely silence; it is نه بابا چیزی نیست ("no, it's nothing") or یه چیزی نشده که ("nothing actually happened"). Reach for خاک به سرم the next time you spill chai on your shirt and listen for the chorus of soft reassurance that follows. That exchange is the entire point of the phrase.
