کاناپه

What it means

کاناپه (kânâpe) means “couch” or “settee,” the long sofa where two or more people can sit side by side. It is a European loanword, from French “canapé.” In everyday speech کاناپه usually points to the longer, lower couch you lounge on, while مبل is the more general word that also covers single armchairs and formal seating sets.

How to use it

• رو کاناپه دراز کشیدم (ru kânâpe derâz keshidam) “I lay down on the couch”
• کاناپه تختخواب‌شو (kânâpe-ye takhtkhâb-show) “sofa bed (a couch that converts to a bed)”

Cultural note

The کاناپه is the relaxed, everyday seat of a modern Iranian living room, often where the family gathers to watch TV or where an overnight guest sleeps if it converts to a bed. It sits more casually in the home than the formal مبل set kept for receiving visitors.
