A2 — Elementary
What it means
کابینت (kâbinet) “kitchen cabinet” refers to the built-in cupboards of a kitchen, both the upper wall units and the lower base units under the counter. It is a European loanword (compare English cabinet, French cabinet) and in everyday Persian it almost always means kitchen cabinetry specifically. The whole fitted set is often called کابینت آشپزخانه (kâbinet-e âshpazkhâne).
How to use it
- بشقابها تو کابینته (boshghâb-hâ tu kâbinet-e) “the plates are in the cabinet”
- درِ کابینت رو ببند (dar-e kâbinet ro beband) “close the cabinet door”
- کابینت آشپزخونه رو عوض کردیم (kâbinet-e âshpazkhune ro avaz kardim) “we changed the kitchen cabinets”
- کابینت بالا جا نداره (kâbinet-e bâlâ jâ nadâre) “the upper cabinet has no room”
Cultural note
Installing new kâbinet is one of the first things people do when renovating an Iranian kitchen, and MDF and glossy high-gloss finishes are popular choices discussed at length with the cabinetmaker (کابینتساز, kâbinet-sâz). For a free-standing cupboard or wardrobe Persian uses other words like کمد (komod), while kâbinet stays tied to the kitchen.
