What it means
جشنواره (jashnvareh) is the Persian word for a festival, specifically the kind of festival that is organized around competition and curation: film festivals, music festivals, theater festivals, educational festivals. The word is built from جشن (jashn, celebration, feast) plus the suffix ـواره (vareh), which functions as a diminutive or “in the manner of” marker, the same suffix that gives ماهواره (mahvareh, satellite, from ماه, moon, plus vareh) and نقشواره (naqshvareh, motif). The literal sense is “something in the form of a celebration.”
For everyday celebrations and parties, Persian uses جشن (jashn) or مهمانی (mehmani). Jashnvareh is reserved for the institutional, organized kind of event: a juried film festival, an annual music gathering, a cultural week with prizes.
How to use it
The word is industry-standard in arts coverage and casual film talk alike. It takes the ezafe construction freely: جشنواره فیلم (jashnvareh-ye film, film festival), جشنواره موسیقی (jashnvareh-ye musiqi, music festival), جشنواره تئاتر (jashnvareh-ye te’atr, theater festival).

Iran’s festival circuit
Iran’s festival ecosystem is unusually dense for the size of its film industry. The Fajr Film Festival is the state-organized flagship. سینما حقیقت (Cinema Verité) is the major documentary festival, held annually in Tehran. جشنواره فیلم رشد (Roshd, growth) is the long-running educational film festival, founded in the 1960s and still active. International Tehran focuses on world cinema. Each festival has its own constituency, its own politics, and its own gatekeeping function. For Iranian filmmakers, the festival circuit at home is both an opportunity and a filter: a film that wins at Fajr enters the commercial market with momentum; a film that bypasses the festivals often finds itself unable to secure an ekran at all.
Where it comes from
Jashnvareh is a pure Persian formation. جشن (jashn) goes back to Middle Persian jašn and Avestan yasna, the ancient Iranian word for a sacred feast or religious celebration, ultimately from the Indo-Iranian root yaz- (to worship, to sacrifice). The suffix ـواره is also native, related to the noun وار (var, manner, similar to) and functioning to soften or pattern the base noun. The compound is a modern coinage on ancient parts, made to name a modern institution with native vocabulary rather than borrowing the word festival.
