هزاران

What it means

هزاران (hazârân) is the plural form of هزار (hazâr), “a thousand,” and it functions in everyday Persian as an all-purpose hyperbole-marker. The literal sense is “thousands,” but in speech the number is almost always exaggeration: thousands of times, thousands of reasons, thousands of complaints. Iranians count emotional weight in thousands the way English speakers say “a million times.” The closely related singular form هزار, paired with بار (“time”) or تا (a counter), does most of the work in casual speech, while هزاران carries a slightly heavier, more literary weight.

The construction is so naturalized that nobody hears it as numerical anymore: it has crossed over into pure expressive emphasis. Stacking is common too: هزاران هزار (“thousands upon thousands”) is the verbal equivalent of waving both hands. Combine هزار بار with verbs of speaking, asking, or warning to channel real frustration: هزار بار بهت گفتم, “I told you a thousand times,” is one of the most-used parental sentences in Persian.

Cultural note

Persian has a layered tradition of poetic exaggeration that bleeds into everyday speech. هزار شب (a thousand nights) echoes هزار و یک شب, the title of the One Thousand and One Nights, a story collection that gave the world Scheherazade. When Iranians stack هزار onto sentences, they are riding a long current of expressive numerical inflation. Treat the number as emotional volume, not arithmetic. The same pattern appears across other large round numbers: صد (a hundred) carries similar hyperbole weight in lighter contexts (صد بار گفتم), while میلیون (a million) is the modern, slangy successor. هزار sits in the middle, classic and warm.
