What it means
حوزه (howze, often written hawza in English-language scholarship) is a Shia Islamic seminary. The Arabic word means “area, sphere, district,” and in religious use it names the institutional space where students study Islamic law, theology, philosophy, and Quranic sciences for years to qualify as clerics.
The two great centers of the Shia world are حوزه علمیه نجف (howze-ye elmiy-e najaf) in Iraq and حوزه علمیه قم (howze-ye elmiy-e qom) in Iran. Smaller howzas exist in Mashhad, Isfahan, and other Iranian cities, and now also in places like Beirut and Damascus.

Religious context
The howza is to Shia clergy what a research university is to academics, but the comparison only goes so far. Students enter young, often as teenagers, and progress through stages: مقدمات (basics, Arabic grammar and logic), سطح (the levels, where students work through classical legal and philosophical texts), and finally درس خارج (“external studies,” advanced jurisprudence taught directly by senior مرجع (marjaʾs, sources of emulation)). Reaching the rank of مجتهد (mojtahed, qualified to derive law independently) usually takes 15 to 25 years.
Najaf in Iraq is the older and historically more prestigious center, dating back nearly a thousand years. Qom rose to prominence in the 20th century under Sheikh Abdul-Karim Haeri-Yazdi and grew further when Ayatollah Khomeini and other senior figures consolidated activity there. In the period of Saddam Hussein’s rule over Iraq, Qom temporarily eclipsed Najaf in active scholarly output. Najaf has since recovered.
Howza education is structurally different from the Iranian state university system (دانشگاه, dâneshgâh). Students choose their teachers, pay no tuition, often live in shared housing near the seminary, and progress at their own pace. The state university trains engineers, doctors, and bureaucrats. The howza trains clerics. Some scholars do both, but the institutions are separate.
For learners interested in religious vocabulary: knowing the word howza unlocks a lot of Iranian political and cultural reading. When Iranian media talks about حوزه و دانشگاه (howze va dâneshgâh), “the seminary and the university,” they are naming the two main institutions of Iranian intellectual life and the long-running tension between them.
