What it means

هواپیما (havâpeymâ) is the standard Persian word for airplane or aircraft. It is a compound formed from هوا (havâ, meaning “air,” a word of Arabic origin, borrowed from Arabic هَوَاء) and پیما (peymâ, meaning “traverser” or “measurer,” from the pure Persian verb پیمودن, peymudan). Together they mean roughly “one that traverses the air.” The word is used in both formal and casual speech and is the expected word in all contexts. There is no common colloquial alternative; Iranians of all backgrounds simply say هواپیما.

How to use it

  • هواپیما یه ساعت دیگه فرود میاد. (Havâpeymâ yek sâ’at dige forud miyâd.) “The plane lands in one hour.”
  • بلیت هواپیما گرون شده. (Belit-e havâpeymâ gerun shode.) “Plane tickets have gotten expensive.”
  • از هواپیما می‌ترسم. (Az havâpeymâ mi-tarsam.) “I am afraid of airplanes.”
  • هواپیما به موقع پرواز کرد. (Havâpeymâ be mow’e’ parvâz kard.) “The plane departed on time.”

Cultural note

Iran’s national carrier, Iran Air (هواپیمایی ایران, Havâpeymâyi-ye Irân), has operated since 1944 and the word هواپیما is directly embedded in its name. Domestic air travel between cities such as Tehran, Mashhad, Shiraz, and Isfahan is common, and the airline industry is a significant part of Iranian transport infrastructure. Passengers typically use هواپیما for all aircraft types, from small propeller planes to large jets.
