What it means
گوزن (gavazn) means deer or stag, referring to larger antlered deer such as the red deer and the Caspian red deer. The word descends from Middle Persian gawazn, a native Iranian term with no Arabic or Turkic borrowing involved. In everyday speech, گوزن is the standard word for deer as a species, while the male with a full rack of antlers may be called گوزن نر (gavazn-e nar). The key distinction from آهو (âhu) is size and build: آهو is the slender gazelle of the open steppe, while گوزن is the heavy, forest-dwelling deer. The Persian Fallow Deer (گوزن زرد ایرانی, gavazn-e zard-e Irâni) is one of Iran’s most endangered mammals and the subject of active conservation programs.

Cultural note
The Persian Fallow Deer (گوزن زرد ایرانی) was once widespread across the Middle East but was thought extinct until a small population was discovered in Khuzestan province in the 1950s. Iran’s Department of Environment has been breeding the species in protected reserves, and it is now considered a national conservation success story. The deer also appears in ancient Persian art, including reliefs at Persepolis, as a symbol of nature and the royal hunt.
