What it means

فیلم (film) is borrowed from English film and is fully naturalized in Persian. In its primary sense it means a movie or a film. It also retains the photographic sense (a roll of film for a camera). The compound verb فیلم بازی کردن (film bâzi kardan) is a rich colloquial idiom meaning to act, to fake, or to put on a performance for effect. When someone is overdramatizing a reaction or pretending to be hurt or upset, another person might say داری فیلم بازی می‌کنی (you are putting on an act). A close synonym for the movie sense is سینما (sinemâ), though that word refers more to the cinema building or institution than to a specific film.

• دیشب یه فیلم خوب دیدم. (dishab ye film-e khub didam.) “Last night I watched a good film.”
• فیلم بازی درنیار. (film bâzi darniâr.) “Stop putting on an act.”
• این فیلم ایرانیه یا خارجی؟ (in film irâniye yâ khâreji?) “Is this film Iranian or foreign?”
• فیلمم تموم شد، نمی‌تونم عکس بگیرم. (filmam tamum shod, nemitunam aks begiram.) “My film ran out, I can’t take photos.”

Cultural note

Iranian cinema has a globally recognized tradition, with directors like Abbas Kiarostami and Asghar Farhadi earning international acclaim. For Iranians, فیلم therefore carries both the everyday sense of an evening movie and a layer of cultural pride. The phrase فیلم بازی کردن emerged because acting in a film is associated with performed emotion, so accusing someone of فیلم بازی is accusing them of theatrical insincerity. This is a common accusation in arguments and also in teasing, where tone makes the difference between a serious charge and an affectionate jab.
