What it means
فیلمنامهنویس (film-name-nevis) is a screenwriter, the person who writes a film-name. The compound is fully transparent: فیلمنامه (screenplay) plus نویس, the present-stem agent noun of نوشتن (neveshtan, to write). The same نویس shows up in روزنامهنویس (newspaper writer, journalist), داستاننویس (story writer), زندگینامهنویس (biographer). The pattern is one of Persian’s most productive word-building tools.
A film-name-nevis is treated in Iran as an author in their own right, not as a technician hired by the director. The credit on Iranian films often names the screenwriter as prominently as the director.

The figures
Bahram Beyzaie (born 1938) is the dean of Iranian screenwriters, a playwright, scholar, and director whose scripts (Bashu, the Little Stranger; The Travelers; The Ballad of Tara) are studied as Persian literature. Asghar Farhadi (born 1972) brought the Iranian screenwriting tradition to the global mainstream with About Elly, A Separation (Oscar 2011), and The Salesman (Oscar 2016, Best Foreign Language Film). Other essential names: Dariush Mehrjui as his own writer, Abbas Kiarostami working in his own minimalist register, Mohammad Rasoulof, Jafar Panahi, and the younger generation including Saeed Roustayi.
The working life
A film-name-nevis in Iran works between commercial demand (television series, comedies, family films) and the festival circuit (the festival of Fajr in February, international submissions). The state involvement in cinema means scripts often pass through approval at the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance (Ershad) before they can be filmed, which has produced both creative workarounds and outright bans. Several leading screenwriters have worked under writing or travel bans.
Where it comes from
The word follows the same 1930s coinage as فیلمنامه itself, formed when Iranian cinema was institutionalized and needed Persian vocabulary for its professions. The نویس suffix is one of the oldest agent-noun patterns in Persian, going back to Middle Persian, and it produces a clean native term despite the foreign loan فیلم at the start.
In our voice
Read the screenwriters before you watch their films. Beyzaie and Farhadi are writers first; what their cameras do is downstream of what their scripts already did.
