What it means
فیلمبردار (film-bardar) is the Persian word for a cinematographer or camera operator, the person behind the camera who frames every shot. The compound reads as “film-carrier” or “film-holder”: فیلم (film, the English loan) plus بردار, the agent form of بردن (bordan, to carry, to lift, to take). In a country whose cinema is internationally known for its image, the film-bardar is a title that carries weight.
The word covers both the artistic role (director of photography) and the technical role (camera operator). On smaller Iranian productions the same person often does both. On a big-budget film the credits will list a مدیر فیلمبرداری (modir-e film-bardari, director of photography) above the working film-bardar.

The Iranian masters
Iranian cinematography has a reputation that exceeds the budgets it works with. Mahmoud Kalari is the name most often cited abroad, the film-bardar on Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation (2011) and About Elly (2009), and on Abbas Kiarostami’s The Wind Will Carry Us (1999). His work moves between handheld realism and composed long takes without losing the same quiet authority. Other names in the tradition include Aziz Saati and Hossein Jafarian. The visual signature of Iranian New Wave cinema, the long take in landscape, the camera placed inside a moving car, the framed doorway, the patient hold on a face, was built by film-bardars working under tight budgets and tight censorship.
Where it comes from
The word is a modern compound, formed when Persian needed a word for the new profession of cinematography in the early twentieth century. فیلم is the English loan, which Persian absorbed along with the medium itself. بردار is built on the present stem of بردن (bordan), the same productive agent suffix that gives نقشهبردار (naqshe-bardar, surveyor) and عکسبردار (aks-bardar, photographer). Compare the parallel construction in اکسبردار: the same “carrier” logic applied to still images. Persian had been making nouns this way for centuries; cinema just gave the pattern a new subject.
