What it means

اکران شدن (ekran-shodan) is the Persian compound verb for “to be released in theaters,” the verb form of the noun اکران (ekran, theatrical release). It is the verb you reach for when a film opens in cinemas, when a release date is announced, when a long-delayed project finally reaches the public. The construction is passive in flavor: the film does not release itself, it is released, it becomes shown.

The active counterpart is اکران کردن (ekran-kardan, to release a film), used when the agent is the studio, the distributor, or the cinema chain. But the passive اکران شدن is far more common in everyday speech and journalism, because the focus is usually the film and not the company behind it.

Compound verb structure

Ekran-shodan is a textbook Persian compound verb: a non-verbal element (here the noun اکران, from French écran) plus the Persian light verb شدن (shodan, to become). Shodan is the second-most productive light verb in Persian after کردن, used mainly to form inchoative and passive compounds: گم شدن (gom shodan, to become lost), باز شدن (baz shodan, to become opened, to open), پیدا شدن (peyda shodan, to be found). The pairing of a noun with shodan turns it into a state-change verb.

  • Present: این فیلم اکران می‌شود (in film ekran mishavad, this film is being released)
  • Past: فیلم دیروز اکران شد (film diruz ekran shod, the film was released yesterday)
  • Future: هفته آینده اکران خواهد شد (hafte-ye ayande ekran khahad shod, will be released next week)
  • Subjunctive: امیدوارم اکران شود (omidvāram ekran shavad, I hope it gets released)
  • Negation: اکران نشد (ekran nashod, was not released)

The contrast with اکران کردن (ekran-kardan): شدن forms the passive/inchoative (“the film was released”), کردن forms the active (“they released the film”). Both are correct; the choice depends on whether you want to foreground the film or the agent.

How to use it

balakhare film-esh emsal ekran shod.

His film was finally released this year.

بالاخره فیلمش امسال اکران شد.

in film hanuz ekran nashode.

This film has not been released yet.

این فیلم هنوز اکران نشده.

Where it comes from

The non-verbal element اکران is a French loan, from écran (screen), entering Persian in the early twentieth century with the cinema industry. شدن is the native Persian copula-and-light-verb, going back to Middle Persian šudan (to go, to become) and Avestan šyav-. The compound is a typical Persian construction: a foreign content word fitted into a native verbal frame. Persian builds verbs this way for almost every new domain, from technology (آپلود شدن, aplowd shodan, to be uploaded) to medicine to law.
