What it means
کاور (cover) is the Persian word for the front image of a piece of media: a book cover, a Spotify album cover, a YouTube video thumbnail, a Facebook or Twitter profile banner. Whatever frames the content visually before you open it, the front face, the small art that makes you click or pick it up. The word is fully naturalized in tech and design contexts; it conjugates into Persian sentences without a seam.
Pre-internet Persian had جلد (jeld) for the cover of a physical book, and جلد still works there. Once the concept moved into digital media (album art, video thumbnails, channel headers), کاور took over, partly because it covered the wider visual-framing category and partly because Spotify and YouTube interfaces taught users the word by repetition.

Cover vs jeld
For physical books, both کاور and جلد work and natives switch between them without effort. A bookseller will say جلد by default (جلد سخت, jeld-e sakht, hardcover); a graphic designer talking about the same book will say کاور because she is thinking about the design surface, not the binding. Once you leave physical media, جلد drops away and کاور rules: nobody says جلد آلبوم for an album cover.
The Pure Persian Movement offers روجلد (rujeld, on-cover) and پوشانه (pushāneh, covering thing) for the design sense. Both lose to کاور in actual use; the pushāneh proposal is almost folkloric, the kind of word people quote ironically.
Where it comes from
Cover entered Persian first through Western printed media (LP and CD covers in the 1970s and 80s) and accelerated with digital platforms. The word survived because Persian already had a culture of valuing book design (Iranian publishing has a strong cover-art tradition) and the English term gave designers and consumers a shared label for the design object itself.
In our voice
Use کاور for any cover that lives on a screen. Use جلد for any cover you can hold in your hand. Both are correct in their lane.
