What it means
چشم روشنی (cheshm-roshani) is the gift you bring when someone close to the recipient has had wonderful news. It literally means “eye-brightening,” the brightening of the eyes from joy.
Both the gift itself and the social ritual carry this name.
How to use it
- این چشم روشنیه (in cheshm-roshani-ye) “This is the cheshm-roshani gift”
- چشم روشنی آوردم (cheshm-roshani âvardam) “I brought a cheshm-roshani”
- چشمتون روشن (cheshmetun roshan) “May your eyes be bright” (the spoken blessing)
The literal meaning
چشم (cheshm, eye) + روشنی (roshani, brightness/light) = “the brightness of the eye.” The image is of someone’s eyes lighting up at good news.
The figurative meaning
Speakers mean a tangible gift, often sweets, flowers, or money in an envelope, brought to share in someone’s joy. The matching spoken blessing is چشمتون روشن (may your eyes be bright), said when you hear the good news.
When you’d say it
Your aunt’s daughter just got engaged. You arrive at her house with a box of pastries and say چشمتون روشن، این چشم روشنی.
Cultural note
The ritual is woven into Iranian family life. Engagements, newborns, exam results, military service ending, a son returning from abroad, all trigger a cheshm-roshani exchange. The gift is small, the gesture is what counts. Skipping it when you should have brought one reads as cold.
