What it means

چهلم (chehelom) means “the fortieth” and refers to the memorial ceremony held on the fortieth day after a person’s death. It is a pure Persian word built from چهل (chehel, forty) plus the ordinal suffix -م (-om). The number forty carries deep symbolic weight in Persian and Islamic tradition, and this ceremony is typically the largest gathering in the mourning cycle, often larger than شب هفت (shab-e haft, the seventh-night gathering). It is sometimes called مجلس ختم (majles-e khatm) in more formal contexts.

How to use it

  • چهلم مادرم هفته دیگه‌ست. (chehelom-e mâdaram hafte-ye dige-st.) “My mother’s fortieth-day memorial is next week.”
  • چند نفر برای چهلم اومدن؟ (chand nafar barâye chehelom umadan?) “How many people came for the chehelom?”
  • مراسم چهلم توی تالار برگزار میشه. (marâsem-e chehelom tu-ye tâlâr bargozâr mishe.) “The chehelom ceremony will be held in a hall.”
  • چهلم امام حسین اربعین نامیده میشه. (chehelom-e emâm hossein arba’in nâmide mishe.) “The fortieth day of Imam Hossein is called Arbaeen.”

Cultural note

Chehelom is among the most significant mourning occasions in Iranian culture. On a practical level, families often rent a hall or mosque for the event, print formal announcements, and arrange catering for a large number of guests. The number forty holds sacred resonance in Shia Islam, most visibly in Arba’een (اربعین), the annual pilgrimage to Karbala on the fortieth day after Ashura. The chehelom of a private individual draws on this same symbolic register. After chehelom, a family may hold one further gathering at the one-year mark (سالگرد, sâlgard), but the fortieth day is widely considered the formal end of the primary mourning period.
