What it means

بزرگ‌تر (bozorgtar) is literally the comparative of بزرگ (bozorg, big): bigger. But in family life it stops meaning size and starts meaning rank. The bozorgtar is the elder, the senior person in the room, the one whose chair you offer, whose plate you fill first, whose opinion ends an argument. It is a position, not a measurement.

You hear it constantly in Iranian households. بزرگ‌تر اومد بلند شو (bozorgtar umad, boland sho, the elder came in, stand up). بزرگ‌تر گفته (bozorgtar gofteh, the elder has spoken, meaning case closed). The word builds the architecture of who defers to whom.

How it works in family life

Iranian families run on age hierarchy more explicitly than most Western ones. The bozorgtar is not always the oldest by years; it is the oldest in the relevant frame. At a family dinner, your grandfather is the bozorgtar. At a cousins gathering, the oldest cousin is the bozorgtar. At work, the senior colleague holds the role. It is contextual.

The respect is real. You do not interrupt the bozorgtar. You do not sit before the bozorgtar sits. You do not leave the room before saying goodbye. These are not performative rituals to most Iranians; they are how love and respect get encoded.

The grammar piece

The -تر (-tar) suffix is the standard Persian comparative, attaching to any adjective: bozorg (big) becomes bozorgtar (bigger); kuchak (small) becomes kuchaktar (smaller); khub (good) becomes khubtar or behtar (better). In the family context, bozorgtar drops the literal comparative reading and works as a noun: the bigger-one, meaning the elder. The same pattern shows up in kuchaktar (the younger), meaning the junior member of a sibling group.

Bozorgtar is one of those words that tells you what a culture cares about. English has no single word for it because English homes are not organized this way. When you learn bozorgtar you are learning a social map, not a vocabulary item.
