بایو pronounced by Elyar

What it means

بایو (bio) is the Persian word for the short self-description on a social media profile: the 150-character Instagram bio, the Twitter bio under your handle, the Telegram channel description. It is the line under the username where Iranians put their job title, a poem fragment, a Rumi quote, a phone number for business inquiries, or just a single emoji. The word is short for English bio (from biography), and it entered Persian with Instagram in the 2010s.

The Farhangestan suggests معرفی (mo’arrefi, introduction) or زندگی نامه کوتاه (zendegi-nāmeh-ye kutāh, short biography) for the underlying concept. Neither has any traction in social media contexts. Bio won the slot before any official alternative was proposed, and the word now sits naturalized in Persian, taking possessive endings (بایوش, bio-esh, his/her bio) and Persian verb collocations.

How to use it

bio-esh kheyli bāmazas.

Her bio is really funny.

بایوش خیلی بامزس.

shomāre-am tu bio-mast.

My number is in my bio.

شماره‌م تو بایومه.

bio-eto chera avaz kardi?

Why did you change your bio?

بایوت رو چرا عوض کردی؟

What goes in an Iranian bio

The genre rewards compression. A typical Iranian Instagram bio carries one or two of: a profession (دندانپزشک, dandānpezeshk, dentist), a city (تهران, Tehran), a poem fragment (often from Hafez or Forough), a Telegram channel link, a phone number for business, an emoji string. Diaspora bios add a second city in Latin letters (Tehran / Toronto). Activist bios since 2022 often include the date a friend was killed, or the name مهسا (Mahsa) in white-text-on-white as a coded marker. The form is small, the social signals it carries are not.

Where it comes from

Bio is a clipping of English biography. It became an interface label first on Twitter, then on Instagram, where the 150-character limit shaped the form into something different from a real biography, a kind of compressed self-pitch. Persian borrowed the interface label, not the underlying biography sense; the Farhangestan calques target the biography meaning and miss the social-media-specific version, which is part of why they failed to displace the word.

In our voice

Use بایو for any social media profile description. It is neutral, universal, immediately understood. The native معرفی still works in formal contexts (a speaker’s introduction at a conference) but not for the small box under your username.
